[He knew this question was coming, and he had hoped to think of a good way to explain it. It didn't happen, so all he can do is wing it.]
I guess I can try to simplify it...
Basically, the longer you're in there, the better the chance everything about yourself you try to hide and suppress takes its own form. Then if you try to deny it's a part of you, it turns into a monster and kills you.
Well I mean, it tries to kill you, it's not like it's totally hopeless or anything. You're just probably done for if you're on your own, and even with friends it's not like those things are any fun to fight.
I have a feeling that suddenly being faced with everything you've ever denied about yourself while trapped inside a TV would bring up an existential crisis all on its own, never mind having someone tell you that you should just accept your inner demons to top it all off.
[A shrug.]
Maybe that's just me though.
... How many of you are there, anyway? You said it was you and your friends, right?
You're probably right, but in our defense they never really let us get to the 'or they'll kill you' part of 'accept your inner demons or they'll kill you.'
[He chuckles a bit]
Alright, roll call! So there's me and my best friend, and the annoying guy we met on the other side. Our friends Chie and Yukiko, then there's Rise, Kanji and Naoto. So that makes eight of us.
Yeah, we wound up with a pretty decent crew. But when you think about all the people that live in a city, eight people getting into crazy supernatural stuff isn't really a big number.
[There's a moment of brief annoyance, but he can't really be surprised he's not getting off with a half explanation. So instead, he'll give the kid the full explanation.]
Alright, you want the full story?
The day my best friend moved to town, he met a goddess in disguise at a gas station who gave him the ability to enter TV's. We got interested because of a supernatural TV show connected to that world that only airs at midnight on rainy nights. He was showing us how he could enter the TV when we all fell in.
Then when people started dying, I convinced him to go in with me and investigate. My shadow showed up, I denied it, it tried to kill us, he beat it up, I accepted it and that gained me the power to go into TV's too.
[She's heard literally nothing before "gained me the power to go into TVs, too." But she thinks it's just a weird way of saying that he's been on TV. That's the way it makes sense, right?
And her eyes go wide at this stranger who is talking to her brother and her optimism overrides her ability to read a room.]
About fifteen seconds. [Yosuke is going to have a twelve year old suddenly in his face. Well. Kind of short to be in his face, but she is going to be right in front of him peering up at him with child like innocence, so very very excited.]
That's amazing. I never thought I'd meet somebody famous this summer. My name's Mabel--
[Wait this could be her chance. She drops her voice to be dramatic and mysterious sounding (it fails. Mabel don't.).]
But you can call me Lady Mabelton Pinesworth. It's my stage name.
[Is... is she hitting on him? Or does she just think he's her ticket to the stage? Either way he's at a loss. So he tries to play it off, forever thinking he's smoother than he actually is.]
Do you mind if I stick to just Mabel? It's a little more, uh... personal that way.
I'm Yosuke Hanamura. I sort of found my way here accidentally and your brother's been helping me out.
Unfortunately, it's a little more complicated than just getting him a plane ticket. He might not be from the same point in time as us. He might not even be from this universe!
I... I hadn't actually thought about where he could stay. If all else fails, I think we have some sleeping bags, right?

That clear it up?
... mabel was invited. don't invite mabel places.

Dipper, you brought a TV star home?
I think you mean invite Mabel everywhere.
Wh-what? Mabel! How long have you been listening?!
This was ten thousand percent worth waiting for
the completely wrong idea. Oh boy.]
TV star? No, not really, I just... uh... well, my friends have been on TV?
[It's not technically a lie!]

Where are you from? The Mystery Shack is kinda out of the way, isn't it?

I found him in the woods after he fell through a wormhole worm's wormhole.

[He breathes a sigh of relief. Lying is seldom his strong suit.]
That makes life easier. I still need to find a way home though.

Think Grunkle Stan will let him stay on the couch while we're figuring it out? Or is he going to have to sleep in our closet?
